Venograms

Venogram overlay

A venogram is a special X-ray test that uses a contrast dye to show how blood flows through the veins. It helps doctors find blood clots, blockages, or other vein problems.

How Do Venograms Work?

Dye injection

A doctor puts a safe contrast liquid into a vein (usually in your foot, leg, or arm).


X-ray pictures

As the dye moves through your blood vessels, live X-rays (fluoroscopy) take clear pictures of the inside of your veins.


Treatment option

Sometimes, doctors can fix a blocked vein right away using a small balloon or mesh tube called a stent during the same test.

What are Venograms For?

Blood Clots

You have signs of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a blocked vein.

You have ongoing swelling, cramps, or pain in your legs.

What are the Benefits of Venograms

Diagnostic advantages


  • Detects blood clots (DVT): One of the most common uses — venograms can identify deep vein thrombosis with high accuracy, including clots that other tests might miss

  • Maps venous anatomy: Shows the size, location, and structure of veins, which is useful for identifying blockages, narrowing, or abnormal vein formation

  • Identifies venous insufficiency: Helps diagnose valve problems that cause blood to pool or flow backward (reflux), a key contributor to varicose veins and chronic venous disease

  • Evaluates vein compression or obstruction: Useful for conditions like May-Thurne syndrome (where an artery compresses a vein) or other structural blockages

  • Guides vascular surgery planning: Provides detailed mapping before procedures like vein harvesting for bypass surgery, dialysis access planning, or vein stenting

  • Minimally invasive: Usually performed via a small catheter or needle inserted into a vein, without the need for open surgery

  • Can be combined with treatment: In some cases, if a clot or blockage is found, doctors can treat it in the same session (e.g., clot-dissolving medication, angioplasty, or stent placement)

  • Detailed, real-time images: Shows how blood flows through the venous system, which helps assess function, not just structure

  • Helps prevent complications from DVT: Such as pulmonary embolism, by catching clots early

  • Assists in managing chronic venous conditions: Helps guide treatment for chronic swelling, skin changes, or ulcers caused by poor venous return

  • Useful when non-invasive tests are inconclusive: Sometimes ultrasound doesn't give a clear enough picture, especially in certain body areas (like the pelvis or abdomen), and venography fills that gap
