Angiograms

An angiogram is an X-ray test that uses a special contrast dye to show how blood flows through the arteries or veins in your body. Doctors use it to find narrow spots, blockages, or bulges (aneurysms) in blood vessels.

How Do Angiograms Work?

Numbing and Access

The doctor cleans and numbs a small area on your wrist or groin, then makes a tiny cut to reach the blood vessel.


Inserting the Tube

A thin, flexible plastic tube called a catheter is gently guided through the blood vessel up to the target area, such as the heart.


Injecting the Dye

The special contrast dye flows through the tube into the blood vessels. You might feel a brief warm or flushing sensation.


Taking X-rays

As the dye moves through the arteries or veins, an X-ray machine takes rapid pictures.


Finding the Problem

Areas where the dye cannot flow freely show blockages, narrow spots, or bulges (aneurysms).

What Do Angiograms Do?

Catheter insertion

A thin, flexible tube is placed into a blood vessel through a small cut in your arm or leg.


Dye injection

Special contrast dye flows through the tube into your blood vessels.


X-ray imaging

X-rays take pictures in real-time as the dye moves, showing where blood flow is slowed or stopped

What are the Benefits of Angiograms

Diagnostic advantages


  • Precise visualization: Shows the exact location, severity, and extent of blockages, narrowing (stenosis), or abnormalities in blood vessels

  • Identifies blockages before symptoms worsen: Can detect coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, aneurysms, or blood clots often before they cause a major event

  • Guides treatment decisions: Helps doctors decide whether a patient needs medication, angioplasty/stenting, or bypass surgery

  • High accuracy: Considered a "gold standard" for evaluating blood vessel disease, often more detailed than non-invasive imaging like CT or MRI angiography

  • Same-visit intervention: If a blockage is found, doctors can often treat it immediately in the same procedure (e.g., balloon angioplasty or stent placement) — this is called a "diagnostic and therapeutic" procedure

  • Quick recovery: Compared to surgical alternatives, recovery time is generally short — often same-day or next-day discharge

  • Real-time imaging: Provides live, moving images of blood flow, which is useful for assessing how well vessels are functioning, not just their structure
