
Angiograms

An angiogram is an X-ray test that uses a special contrast dye to show how blood flows through the arteries or veins in your body. Doctors use it to find narrow spots, blockages, or bulges (aneurysms) in blood vessels.
How Do Angiograms Work?
Numbing and Access
The doctor cleans and numbs a small area on your wrist or groin, then makes a tiny cut to reach the blood vessel.
Inserting the Tube
A thin, flexible plastic tube called a catheter is gently guided through the blood vessel up to the target area, such as the heart.
Injecting the Dye
The special contrast dye flows through the tube into the blood vessels. You might feel a brief warm or flushing sensation.
Taking X-rays
As the dye moves through the arteries or veins, an X-ray machine takes rapid pictures.
Finding the Problem
Areas where the dye cannot flow freely show blockages, narrow spots, or bulges (aneurysms).
