A stent placement is a medical procedure to put a tiny metal mesh tube into a blocked or narrowed blood vessel or tube. It holds the pathway open so blood or other fluids can flow well.
How Do Stent Placements Work?
Access the vessel
A doctor numbs a small area (usually the wrist or groin) and makes a tiny cut to insert a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into an artery.
Locate the blockage
Guided by live X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy), the doctor threads the catheter to the narrowed site and injects a special contrast dye to clearly view the blockage.
Expand and deploy
A tiny deflated balloon carrying the collapsed metal mesh stent is pushed through the catheter to the blockage; inflating the balloon widens the artery and locks the stent permanently against the wall.
Complete the process
The balloon and catheter are removed from the body, leaving the open stent behind to act as a permanent structural prop for the vessel.
