WHAT IS AN ANGIOGRAM?

AdobeStock_166189286_Preview.jpeg

A lower extremity angiogram is a diagnostic procedure that is used to help diagnose and treat diseased blood vessels. Through the use of a small catheter inserted into your groin or foot, and contrast imaging, the physician is able to identify blocked, damaged, or abnormal arteries in your legs.

If clinically indicated, the doctor may perform:

  • Angioplasty – using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery

  • Atherectomy – “cleaning out” the plaque in the artery using a laser or rotating device

  • Stenting – to help keep the artery open after atherectomy or angioplasty, a small tube made of wire mesh is permanently implanted in the artery to help keep the vessel open

What to expect after the procedure?

Our facility offers same day, outpatient procedures. This means you will be able to go home after the procedure after spending a few hours in post-care recovery with a family member, friend, or caregiver.

It is normal after the procedure to experience:

  • Bruising at the puncture site

  • Minor swelling and soreness

More detailed discharge instructions will discussed after your procedure.
