Varithena Treatments

An illustration of mircofoam in a blood vessel

Varithena is an FDA-approved prescription microfoam used in a non-surgical procedure to treat varicose veins and related venous problems. It works by damaging the inner lining of a damaged vein, causing the vein to collapse so blood flows through healthier veins instead.

How Do Varithena Treatments Work?

Micro-foam injection

A doctor injects up to 5 mL per injection (max 15 mL per session) of polidocanol 1% foam into the targeted vein using ultrasound guidance.

Vein collapse

The foam fills the faulty vein, causing it to close and seal shut.

Blood rerouting

Blood naturally redirects to normal, healthy surrounding

What are the Benefits of Varithena Treatments

Key benefits

  • Minimally invasive, no surgery: It's effective on veins of different sizes without requiring incisions, sedation, or general anesthesia. Treatment usually requires just one or two needles.

  • Nearly painless: Only about 4% of patients in clinical trials reported pain at the injection site.

  • Quick procedure: It typically takes less than an hour to complete. Delaware Vein Center

  • Fast recovery: The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes, and patients are able to walk immediately afterward. Walking and light activity are encouraged following the procedure to promote circulation and support healing.

  • No scarring: Unlike surgical procedures, it leaves no visible marks on the skin.

  • Symptom relief: Patients reported decreased leg heaviness, swelling, burning sensation, and itching in just one treatment. Many patients notice fast relief from symptoms such as pain, swelling, and fatigue.

  • Cosmetic improvement: As the treated veins are absorbed by the body over time, the appearance of the legs gradually improves.

  • Versatile: It can treat both legs simultaneously.

  • In-office procedure: Performed in-office, with no anesthesia required, typically guided by a brief ultrasound to locate the diseased vein.
